Jarel Barcelona Tadio, finishes his college degree with Latin honors, the “proud kasambahay” proves to be an inspiration to all young dreamers. Jarel graduates from the Cagayan State University with the distinction of magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality industry management.
He shared his heartwarming journey in a Facebook post, the post went viral, inspiring many, the attention he got on social media lead to his life being featured on ABS-CBN’s award-winning drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya last Saturday, October 20.
His hardships are reenacted in the Maalaala Mo Kaya episode. “Nagsimula ako mangarap nung mapagtanto kong iba ang buhay na meron ako sa buhay ng mga batang nasa paligid ko—na marangya at di hamak na mas komportable ang buhay nila kesa sa akin” he said, highlighting the fact that he never really dreamed of finishing his studies.
Let alone to finish with flying colors, he just wanted to give his family a better life. During his elementary days, he was asked the question what he wanted to be when he grew up, and he did not have an answer for it.
He adds. Early on Jarel had no interest in pursuing tertiary education because he knew that it was expensive and that his family couldn’t afford it.
So when he was 15, Jarel followed in the footsteps of his mom and worked as a helper in the house. He first worked in the catering industry but soon left because it couldn’t meet his financial needs.
After his short stint in catering he proceeded to work as house helper “Namasukan ako bilang maid. Oo, katulong po, yaya. Kasambahay. Pero taas nuo ako sa naging trabaho ko. Marangal yun. At ang masaya dun, libre na ang tulugan, libre pa ang pagkain, libre meryenda, libre tv, libre cable at libre wifi. Saan ka pa!” he narrates about his experience.
Although he faced other challenges such as time management; dividing his time between study and work, and he was also belittled by some because of his current situation.
But instead of sulking he used it as his motivation. In the end, he managed to finish his college education with distinction dedicating his achievements to his parents.
